ARAL – FISHING IN AN INVISIBLE SEA
ARAL – PESCANDO IN UN LAGO INVISIBILE
On the Aral Sea, between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, live three generations of fishermen. Their life is marked by the daily eff ort to survive in a place made so inhospitable by one of the greatest environmental disasters of all time. The fishing here is now possible only in the meagre pools of water left after the draining of the lake due to irrigation canals. The three generations of fi shermen tell their stories: the elders, who represent historical memory but also the expectation of death; the adults, tied to their land and to a tenacious hope for improvement; the young, who know only this reality and are unable to imagine that anything can change.
