Le Capre di Margone
THE GOATS OF MARGONE
Goat farming in Margone, in the Vallelaghi municipality, has deep roots and is based on age-old customs and traditions. The young breeders of Punk goats have embraced these practices while seeking innovative and sustainable approaches. Theirs is one of the most distinctive goat farms in the Trentino-Alto Adige region. Reviving traditional methods, documented in historical footage, the young farmers let their animals graze freely in the forest, choosing their own varied diet of wild plants, which gives them a unique milk used to produce robiola and other cheeses, some aged in a cave that once served as an air-raid shelter. Their cheeses, along with homemade sourdough bread, are sold at the market at a price that reflects their uniqueness. The story told by these young people is genuine and refreshing, and speaks to a philosophy of animal husbandry rooted in respect for the environment and in the dignity of animals, free to graze in their natural habitat.
