Kaali’s greatest concern is finding his beloved sled dog. His four-legged companion has disappeared. Along with his friend Bartilaa, Kaali roams the streets of Tasiilaq, a town in eastern Greenland, searching for the dog. The adults are too busy to help, and his peers make fun of him. “I think I like dogs more than people,” says Bartilaa, a thought his friend silently agrees with. At last, the boys find the dog inside another family’s yard. They manage to free it, but as they flee, Bartilaa is caught by the house’s owner. Kaali hides the dog and goes back to look for his friend—but soon discovers that things aren’t as he thought. The dog hadn’t been stolen: Kaali’s father had sold it because it was too expensive to keep. The boy prays, strokes the dog, and finally decides to return it to its new owner. A tender story of friendship, set against the white horizon of the director’s native land, where he involved the local youth of his town in the film’s production.
